The "Detection of Discriminatory Practises Due to Disability in Prisons" project, initiated by our association as part of the Legal Support Sub-Grant Programme for Strengthening Access to Justice for Disadvantaged Groups by Local Civil Society Organisations, "aimed to identify potentially discriminatory practises faced by disabled people in Diyarbakır prisons and improve their access to the justice system.
The overall aim of the project is to identify factors that hinder access to justice for disabled people detained or sentenced in prisons and to develop effective solutions to remove these barriers.
In the preparatory phase of the project, applications were collected and strategies for communicating with the families of disabled prisoners and convicts were developed in cooperation with organisations working in Diyarbakır prisons.
In addition, the project team prepared a policy document and the content of a survey that can be used in discussions with disabled people undergoing trial for human rights violations.
During the implementation phase, 10 disabled prisoners or convicts were visited by lawyers, the project was presented and consent to participate was obtained.
During these visits, specific surveys were carried out to identify the human rights violations faced by disabled people, followed by legal initiatives.
In the reporting phase, the project team prepared a report containing detailed information on discrimination against disabled people in Diyarbakır prisons, which will be prepared for submission to national/international human rights mechanisms.
In addition, this report was sent to institutions and organisations working in the field of disability rights in Diyarbakır.
